Smart911 is a free service available to Sumter County residents. It lets you create a secure Safety Profile with information that may help 9-1-1 call takers and emergency responders during an emergency.
When you call 9-1-1 from a verified phone number connected to your profile, Smart911 can display the information you chose to provide. This can be especially helpful when you are unable to speak, are under stress, or need responders to know important details before they arrive.
How to register for Smart911
- Go to Smart911.com and select Sign Up.
- Create an account using your name, email address, password, and phone number.
- Verify each phone number you add. Smart911 may send a text message or place an automated call to complete the verification.
- Create your Safety Profile and add only the information you want emergency personnel to receive.
- Review your profile whenever something changes.
- Log in at least once every six months to confirm that the information is still current. A profile that has not been confirmed within six months may be suspended until the account holder logs in again.
There is no charge to create or maintain a Smart911 Safety Profile.
What information should I include?
Every household is different. Information that may help during an emergency includes:
- Names and basic information for household members
- Medical conditions, allergies, medications, or mobility needs
- Communication, hearing, vision, cognitive, or other access and functional needs
- Emergency contacts
- Pets and service animals
- Vehicle descriptions
- A description of the home, driveway, entrance, or other location details that may be difficult to see from the road
- Gate, door, or other access instructions you choose to share
You control what is included in your profile and can add, change, or remove information at any time.
Private access information is not stored in the County's CAD system
Smart911 is separate from Sumter County's Computer Aided Dispatch system, commonly called CAD.
Sumter County does not add or maintain private gate codes, door PINs, lock combinations, alarm codes, or similar access credentials as permanent location information in CAD. Residents should not call or email these codes to the County for entry into CAD.
If emergency responders may need help entering your property, use one of these options:
Smart911 Safety Profile
You may place access instructions in your Smart911 profile if you choose. The information remains under your control and can be updated or removed by signing in to your account. When a 9-1-1 call is placed from a verified phone number and received by a participating 9-1-1 center, the profile can be displayed to the call taker and communicated to responding personnel as needed.
Knox Box
A Knox Box provides a secure, on-site place to keep a key for authorized emergency responders. It can help responders enter a locked home or property without waiting for someone to open the door or causing avoidable damage through forced entry.
Residents and property owners should purchase a Knox product approved for the responding fire department. After the box is installed, use Sumter County's Knox Box request form to request assistance from an inspector with securing the key inside.
Important reminders
- Smart911 does not replace calling or texting 9-1-1 during an emergency.
- Continue answering the call taker's questions if you are able. Those questions help determine the right response and do not delay responders who have already been dispatched.
- A Safety Profile is connected to verified phone numbers. Make sure every household phone that may be used to call 9-1-1 is included and verified.
- Smart911 may not be available if a call is routed to a 9-1-1 center that does not participate in the service.
- Keep access instructions, medical information, household details, and emergency contacts current.
